Forum: R-Forge is being retired
Posted by: Ivan Nenadic
Content: FusionForge, the software R-Forge runs on, is no longer actively maintained. As a result, R-Forge itself is being retired, gradually switching to a read-only site. What's next? Until 2027-01-07: R-Forge continues to work as normal. Project pages, SVN, package builds, mailing lists, forums, and logins still work. From 2027-01-08: R-Forge switches to archive-only mode. All SVN repositories continue to work (via SSH only) and a static snapshot of the web page is preserved. That means that existing projects can be viewed but all other functionality will be disabled (registering projects, package builds, mailing lists, forums, logins). From 2028-01-01: SVN switches to read-only mode. Existing repository history remains available, but no further commits can be made to any codebase. Where now? We hope that all maintainers of active R-Forge projects, migrate their projects to other code hosting platforms so that the R community can still engage with them. A service that we can recommend because it shares many of the ideas and values, that R-Forge was built on, is Codeberg. It is a non-profit, community-led effort that provides services to free and open-source projects, such as Git hosting (using Forgejo), pages, continuous integration, etc. A blog post including a step-by-step tutorial is available at https://www.zeileis.org/news/rforge_codeberg/. It is geared towards Codeberg but can also be used for other Git-based systems. |
